Let this be a lesson to everyone. E-mail does not always, in fact usually doesn’t communicate exactly what you are trying to say to someone and almost never reflects the tone of how you are saying it.
Now more than ever it is very important to carefully read all of your e-mail before sending them out.
I had someone send me an e-mail the other day to tell me someone was posting about Brian Rodgers at a blog. I went to the blog and sure enough, there was my name, Brian Rodgers.
I read the post and it was basically saying that I condone crappy behavior in forums because I was listed as a moderator of this forum. Guilt by association, i guess. The fact was, i had no idea what this person was even talking about.
So, I investigated further and found that there was a nasty thread at this forum going on saying some pretty hateful things about this person that I cetainly do not and did not condone. I help out at this forum every once in a while and receive no pay for it so I obviously do not monitor it all the time like some forum jockeys that we all know at the forums we participate in.
Anyway, I did notice that my name, Brian Rodgers was listed as a moderator, so I decided to e-mail this person.
Well, the e-mail i sent somehow came off as a challenge to this person’s SEO skills, so she decided to take my name, Brian Rodgers and use it to prove a point that she was better at SEO than me. She very well may be, that is not the point.
The point is, pay attention to what you are writing and how you are writing your e-mails, especially if you are making contact with someone for the first time or in a hostile/volatile situation:)
